Plovdiv, Bulgaria

February 2006

Plovdiv can be reached by train from Bulgaria's capital city Sofia in about 2 and a half hours.

The city is steeped in history with Roman ruins being abundant is all quarters.

Plovdiv is affluent and has a style that I guess is unique to Bulgaria. It is definitely worth visiting for at least a day and perhaps better enjoyed over the course of a weekend.

A local couple enjoying the atmosphere of Old Plovdiv.

Rooftops.

One of many Roman ruins that can be found scattered around Plovdiv.

Mosque.

Th streets are charming and are dotted around with lots of shops and restaurants.

One of the famous hanging houses that abound in Old Plovdiv.

Discovered in 1972 following a landslide this 2nd century Ampitheatre has 6000 seats and was part of the Roman provincial town of Trimontium.

One of many houses perched up on top of the cliffside. Like many other old buildings in Plovdiv the roof seems to be alive!

Leave anything for a while in Bulgaria add nature will take over. I thinks its a while since this door was last opened. .

Some dodgy looking folk in the highstreet who seemed to be in someway involved with the selling of fake watches.

Probably a pretty good view can be found from the top of this building.

Sat on a Roman wall, a couple enjoy the winter sunset on top of one of the seven hills.

Straight edges are not the done thing and never have been in Plovdiv. This tiled wall and gate surounds the church of St ?
