Diving Veracruz, Mexico - May 2003

Veracruz is on the gulf coast of Mexico and is not so well known as a tourist destination to non Mexicans. All the better for me because I really liked this place and the diving really is not so bad at all.

The water is clear and there are some real wrecks at various depths. Though technical diving is still in its infancy there are things happening, and I believe in a few years Veracruz will be a really top technical diving location.

This was Liliana's first ever dive. It was a 'Discover Scuba' that I was not too happy about. As I rewrite this in 2005 it's an incredible difference to how she is now in the water.

Thomas came along to experience the city and try out the snorkelling.

Liliana at this moment a dive virgin, but not for long!

Surface conditions are like lake diving at times. Very pleaseant indeed if like me you feel that lurching dive boats are something you could really do without.

One of a lot of Stonefish that can be found on the reefs of Veracruz.

I love to dive with jellyfish. They used to terrify me, but as long as there are not too many, or they are not too dangerous, they can really make a dive.

Luis here, diving around a fairly typical piece of coral. There seems to be not so many fish on the reefs of Veracruz. I'm not quite sure why that is, but don't be put off by this.

Veracruz is a different kind of dive where the architecture of the reef is more important than the marine life.

Checking for a good fit.

Great weather and calm seas are pretty much the norm during the Veracruz dive season, but the season is realtively short.

Travelling from Mexico City, it is always necessary to check conditions before leaving.

A little video of the dives (2.78 Mb)

The water is warm enough for a shorty. Though earlier in the season most definitely not.
